Puckett broke into the majors in 1984 and had a career batting average of .318 while being a six-time Gold Glove center fielder as well as a 10-time All-Star. He was essentially forced to retire in 1995 after he went blind in his right eye due to glaucoma. His dedication, loyalty to the Twins and their fans and obvious exuberance for the game earned him enshrinement into the MLB Hall of Fame in his first try in 2001.
Unfortunately this "forced" retirement did not sit well with him as you might know from his few off field incidents. He died today at the age of 45 after suffering a stroke this past Sunday. Hopefully he will be forever remembered as he was; a true fan's ball player in every sense of the word.
