Catholic Democrats?

This week at an annual "guys weekend" a few friends questioned if I could be a true Catholic and a true Democrat. Of course none of these people asked me about this directly, but that did not stop them from asking my best friend if this was true and possible. I can be objective for a moment and see that these two things might be very confusing and sometimes even contradictory. However, at the end of the day if we are taught that a true democracy is secular then why should I not practice the same exact concepts which are written into our Constitution?

Instead of going into a long rant on this ("guys weekend after effects still going strong) I figured I would put down a breakdown or two to educate those out there that a (not all, not some, simply A) Catholic Democrat can exist:

A Catholic Democrat can believe:
  • Howard Dean is an idiot who will only bring out the worst in the Dems, and also a lot of $10 donations.
  • Pro-Choice. Make no mistake that I am not pro-abortion. I wish that no one in the world would ever have to, want to and decide to do this but that is not my choice. I can only choose what is best for me and theoretically my children.
  • People should be allowed to practice whatever faith they believe in but have no right to stuff it down another persons throat. You want your kid to pray in school--send them to a religious school. However, we should have some common sense and say that the Pledge of Allegiance is for country and we all can make small sacrifices so just say it or just be quiet.
  • John Kerry--Possibly a good man, probably a bad president. Not saying Bush is a good president but lets be honest about what the Dems were throwing out there.

A Catholic Democrat can disagree:

  • Birth control is my business unless the Church wants to start funding me for my kids.
  • The Catholic Church handled the sex scandals about as poorly as Bill Clinton could have. For the love of God please just screw-up, uncover it, admit, apologize for it and then correct it.
  • The Dems and liberals on the death penalty. Sometimes it is not about punishment but retribution. This might be harsh thinking but once you have a kid (daughter for me) and think about pedophiles, murders & rapists you might drop the bleeding heart act and wake up that there is really no reform in certain circumstances.
  • Gay Marriage. If two people love each other than I am damn sure that the God I love will love them right back so there is no reason why we should not either. I am so busy in my own life that I cannot believe that people have enough time to put down people who care and love one another. Get over it and lead a better life yourself.
  • Their is room for faith in the government, schools & corporations. Their must be restraint and common sense as well because without we are all screwed either way.

Just a few quick points for the evening. Enjoy yours while I sober up.
